Republic Poly students use facial recognition and AI to monitor stress levels

New tech unveiled at this weekend’s Smart Nation and U Festival.
Dubbed MILES, the Mediated Learning Environment System won 2nd place at the China Huawei Atlas AI Developer Challenge Competition 2019.
This comes as Huawei Singapore has just launched a new AI lab to let people across the nation test 5G and AI applications to develop new solutions. “We position this lab as a public facility,” said Nicholas Ma, CEO of Huawei International.
Meanwhile, Grace Yap, Senior Lecturer, School of Infocomm, Republic Polytechnic said that “The Huawei Atlas ADI Developer Kit helped our students jump-start the AI programming needed for the MILES project as it came with easy to use APIs and there was a large data set which we could use to train our MILES AI and machine learning”.
The Smart Nation & U festival was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat. “We must do everything within our power to progress together,” he said. “This is why we are working so hard to become a Smart Nation, where every person and business has access to technology, and where everyone is empowered to use technology to improve their lives and the lives of those around them.”
The Deputy Prime Minister signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the NTUC labour organisation to promote new tech training programmes across the nation.
Other Singaporean innovations at the festival included the MooVita autonomous vehicle, and Cruzr, a humanoid service robot.
