Coding will be part of Malaysian school syllabus in 2017

Will be taught in primary and secondary schools.

Coding will be added to the syllabus of national schools next year, the government has announced. The initiative, called the Digital Maker Movement will be launched next month, “where coding is embedded as an official curriculum in schools, starting from standard three onwards,” said Datuk Yasmin Mahmood, CEO of the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), according to the Malay Mail. The project is led by the education department, with support by MDEC. It will be taught in both primary and secondary schools. The subject will also be incorporated into science and math classes, she said. More information on the coding syllabus will be announced in August. “It’s been proven that coding, or computer science is a very important driver towards higher thinking skills,” she continued.
