What can Singapore learn from Germany’s education system?

German universities have pioneered a dual learning programme, where students spend part of their time in the lecture hall and the rest of it in a company in their field.

The Singapore Institute of Technology has partnered with Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg Mannheim (DHBW Mannheim) in Germany to expand the opportunities for dual education to Singapore. President of DHBW Mannheim, Professor Dr Georg Nagler, and SIT will be collaborating to give students the opportunity to apply the theory they learn in the classroom to real-life issues in the workplace. A student studying to be an aerospace engineer, for instance, might have to use their understanding of physics concepts to troubleshoot and fix malfunctioning aircraft during their placement.

Getting companies on board is a crucial part of this programme. DHBW Mannheim is looking to work with the Singapore-German Chamber of Commerce to connect students to mentors in the industry. It will also develop a syllabus for companies to train their staff to become mentors.

Professor Dr Nagler will be in Singapore for the upcoming Applied Learning Conference to present studies based on an in-depth analysis of the changing needs of human resource management, and how universities can change the way they prepare students to meet these changing needs.

Hear about detailed analyses and case studies from Germany’s education system of a corporate state university in day-to-day cooperation with thousands of industrial companies. As one who has worked in the health industry for more than a decade, Professor Dr Nagler will also examine human resource management demands in the health landscape, which is often challenged by the rapid change in customer demands, developments in disruptive technology and shareholder expectations.
