Adelaide begins hunt for the best low-carbon ideas

New challenge to make cut pollution in the city.

South Australia wants to cut carbon emissions and has launched a challenge for entrepreneurs to find the best ways to do this.

The Low Carbon Entrepreneur Prize is a competition to come up with ideas and technologies that can cut emissions in the state capital Adelaide.

Entrepreneurs with the best ideas will get a total seed funding of A$250,000 to build prototypes and take them to market.

“We want bold ideas that will help establish new jobs and new industries in South Australia while helping make Adelaide the world’s first carbon-neutral city,” said South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill.

The state is looking for ideas in four areas: energy, transport, waste, and liveability. It is looking for ways to make government and office buildings more energy-efficient, for instance.

Ideas could also be on getting more people to use public transport, cycles, and electric cars. The challenge is open to anyone in the world, but they will need to partner with a South Australian organisation to deliver the product.

Entries have just opened on 16 March and run until 30 May. Finalists will be announced in June, and the best solutions will be awarded in October.
