Johannesburg in South Africa changed citizens’ perceptions of government bureaucracy just by providing an app for them to easily report complaints.

The ‘Find and Fix’ app allows motorists to road issues and cut resolution time from 32 days to less than a day. This is just one example of the simple steps governments can take towards digital transformation, according to a Microsoft whitepaper.

The report illustrates four key pillars to a digital government roadmap. These are:

  • Engage with citizens to understand their needs and increase public participation
  • Optimise operations and lower costs
  • Empower civil servants and frontline officials to collaborate and increase productivity
  • Leverage data analytics to identify new service opportunities
