Smart City Unit builds app to cut parking bribes.

The Jakarta Smart City Unit is building an app to track illegal parking, Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama said yesterday.

The app will stop citizens from paying off parking officials, he hopes. Officials have been found to let offenders go in exchange for a bribe, he said.

“I want to make an application in which all ticketing is reported,” he added, according to the Jakarta Post. Officials will have to report all illegal parking through the system, he said.

Offenders will have to pay fines directly through a bank, and not to officers, he said.

A location-based app will allow all mayors, and district and subdistrict heads to track illegal parking cases in their areas. The app could be launched within this year, he added. Image by Emran Kassim, licensed under CC BY 2.0
