Malaysia will give polytechnics more control

Academic institutions to be set up as statutory bodies.

Malaysia has announced plans to make polytechnics a statutory body, granting them more authority over budgets and recruitment.

Polytechnics will be given increased control over administrative matters, finances and recruitment of staff, Bernama reports.

This will enable the government to shift its focus on education policies and monitoring standards, said Datuk Mohlis bin Jaafar, Director General of the Department of Polytechnic Education (DPE).

Efforts are being made to set up the regulations, and it would be presented to the Cabinet in June, Mohlis said at an awards event on Tuesday. Last year, moves were made to give all universities more power over their budgets and administration.
