I’m part of the Geographic Information System (GIS) team in the Data Science Division, taking care of the GIS platform and GIS-related matters in JTC. By having GIS in place, our colleagues are able to relate JTC products geographically, improvise planning and help them in the decision-making process. GIS allows for instantaneous collaboration through a shared platform and can drive the improved allocation of resources and planning by the layering of complex data for consideration.
What has been the most exciting thing that you worked on in 2018?
Transforming an existing GIS system into a GIS platform that is closely integrated with the centralised data store, thus empowering the user to create and share GIS content within the organisation.
Data-driven decisions can greatly influence and impact the overall outcome. We are also embarking on various GIS initiatives that leverage the latest advancements in GIS technology such as the integration of Building Information Modeling and GIS. As we continue to tap on the data available and integrate systems, we will be able to work more efficiently and effectively.
If you were to share one piece of advice that you learned in 2018, what would it be?
Be open to changes and differing opinions, and stay positive. Do not be fearful, always be optimistic and you will see how adaptable you are.
What tool or technique particularly interests you for 2019?
I’m looking forward to further developments in geospatial AI, a new form of machine learning based on geographic component, as it is more widely embraced by the industry.
What are your priorities for 2019?
Productise the various geospatial solutions in the pipeline and progress positively on the collaborations with external parties in the areas of GIS.
What is one skill that has helped you the most throughout the course of your career?
Determination and perseverance; nothing will happen if we give up easily.
What advancements do you predict will happen in your field in the next ten years?
More diversion in GIS jobs as new technology arises.

The urge to achieve the desired outcome keeps me motivated.
