Energy Minister Yeo Bee Yin to open Asian Utility Week

The Minister will share her vision to promote new competition, energy efficiency and decarbonisation on 3 September 2019.

At 36, Yeo is the youngest female minister in the Cabinet and has a master's in chemical engineering as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. She is on a mission to transform Malaysia’s energy markets because as she says: “Energy is the enabler of economic development and prosperity for this nation,”. Her focus is on promoting new competition, energy efficiency and decarbonisation.
She has raised the country's renewable energy target to 20 percent (excluding large hydro) by 2025. She wants to turn Malaysia into a financing hub for all green projects in Southeast Asia. She also plans to open up the retail electricity market to competition and allow local players to export to other countries.
By the end of this year, she will launch a new roadmap for energy transition, which could include include peer-to-peer energy trading, allowing prosumers to sell excess electricity to others.
