Huawei spent a whopping US$15bn, or more than 14 percent of its revenue, on Research and Development in 2018.

The tech giant's research focused mostly on basic research and fundamental technologies, such as wireless networks and cloud core networks. It pushed out more than 5,000 patent applications in a single year. To ensure that the company gets the best and brightest ideas globally, it also has 16 R&D centres in cities with the best talent and resources.
