Thailand’s digital ministry partners with Japan

Agreement signed on tech for disaster management, cyber security and postal services.
Thailand’s new Ministry of Digital and Economy and Society has signed a partnership with Japan. The two countries will partner on technology for disaster risk management, cyber security and postal services, according to the Japan Times.
A memorandum of understand was signed last week between the ministry’s permanent secretary, Wilailuk Chuliwattanakul, and Shigeki Suzuki, Vice-Minister for Policy Coordination, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan.
The Japanese ministry also signed a partnership with Thailand’s telecoms regulator, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NTBC).
The two organisation are looking at exchange programmes between its officials and a joint venture in the telecoms sector.
Thailand has an ongoing national broadband project, where it aims to provide internet connectivity to 40,000 villages by the end of next year.
This target is behind the country’s initial plan to connect all 70,000 villages across the country by the end of this year.
The government announced a 38 billion baht (US$ 1 billion) budget for this project in January, split between the telecoms regulator and the former ICT ministry.
