Independent team to keep Indonesia’s anti-terrorism efforts in check

Indonesia has set up an independent team to evaluate and assess the nation’s anti-terrorism measures.

The team - set up by the National Commission on Human Rights - will consist of 13 members, and carry out a comprehensive review of the country’s counterterrorism agency and the police’s anti-terror squad within the last 10 years, said Hafid Abbas, head of commissioner, the Jakarta Post reports.

“This team will reflect how terrorism has been dealt with in the country… so that we can project a future counterterrorism strategy that is in line with the supremacy of law and human rights," he said.

The team would look into cases where officers used excessive force and torture during interrogations, said Haris Azhar, coordinator for the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence.
