India launches solar-powered train in clean energy effort

State-owned railway company is working towards “environment conservation and use of cleaner fuels”.
India has launched its first solar-powered train as part of a commitment to using cleaner fuel. Solar trains with six trailer coaches will save about 21,000 litres of diesel and approximately INR 1.2 million (~US$18,640) per year, according to the Press Information Bureau.
The train runs on solar panels on its roof, and also has other environmentally-friendly features, such as bio-toilets, the release said. It also has a storage battery which ensures sufficient electricity when there is no sunlight.
“Indian Railways has taken a path-breaking leap towards making Indian Railways’ trains greener and more environment-friendly,” Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhu was quoted as saying.
He added that the state-owned railway company is “committed for environment conservation and use of cleaner fuels”.
Over the next six months, 24 more coaches will be outfitted with this system by the Indian Railways Organisation of Alternative Fuel, the release said.
