Indonesia drafts law to monitor app data

Indonesia wants to monitor online data sent out of the country, and is drafting regulations that will allow for it.

Citizens are obliged to share personal data to apps and media sites when using e-services, so “the government has to know that the data will not be misused,” said Rudiantara, Communications and Information Technology Minister.

These companies will be encouraged to collaborate with local telcos on customer service, customer data protection, and to level a fair playing field, said the minister.

They will not need to establish legal entities and joint ventures locally to operate in the country, the Jakarta Post reports.

Apart from drafting the decree, the ministry will also release a customer privacy bill. It will take effect in August, according to the report. Image from the ministry's facebook page
