At GovInsider, we believe that the most impactful insights are found in the reality of implementation, which is within the messy, complex yet rewarding process of making innovation actually work for the people it serves. 

Over the past year, our Guest Column has hosted voices ranging from current and former ministers, digital government practitioners, to researchers talking about the future of governance, the real-world impact of digital public infrastructure (DPI), the ethics of artificial intelligence (AI) and more. 

We are making an open call for contributors. Whether you are a public officer navigating legacy systems, a researcher with a controversial take on policy, or a non-profit leader using tech to reach underserved communities, we want to hear from you. 

What we are looking for 

We aren't looking for press releases.
 

Our readers, your peers in the public sector, are looking for insight, friction, and foresight. We are referring to: 

• The how-to of innovation: Did your agency successfully scale a pilot? What were the practical hurdles and lessons learnt? 

• Policy provocations: Is there a gap in how emerging tech like agentic AI or quantum computing is regulated? 

• Inclusive design: How do we ensure digital services don’t leave anyone behind? 

Who should contribute

You don’t need to be a professional writer or a high-level theorist to write for us.  

We are simply looking for people who are "in the room” where public service happens. We want to hear from: 

1. Current or former public sector practitioners: Whether you are on the frontline or in a project team, you’ve seen what it takes to get a service off the ground 

2. Academia and researchers: If you are researching policy or innovation and have ideas that can be put into practice today

3. Non-profit organisations: If you are working alongside government to support communities and how systems can better serve people

Submission guidelines 

To ensure your insights resonate with our community, keep these criteria in mind: 

Tip #1: Target the public sector

Write for the practitioner. Our audience values the lessons learned over abstract theory. 

Tip #2: Brevity is key

We recommend keeping the wordcount to about 1,200 words, but we encourage you to aim for fewer. Public sector leaders are busy, so a punchy, 800-word piece often has more impact than a long-form essay.

Tip #3: Actionable takeaways

If a reader finishes reading your story in five minutes, what is one thing they should try tomorrow?
