Duterte announces corruption hotlines

Citizen-facing move to crack down on graft.

Philippine President-elect Rodrigo Duterte has announced a plan to set up 12 hotline numbers to combat corruption from government officials.

All calls will be noted down by operators who will be on standby 24 hours a day, he said yesterday.

"You better stop it or I will humiliate you,” the President-elect added in a speech. Duterte singled out the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC) to stop their corrupt practices.

Those two departments were also singled out because of the long queues citizens incur at their respective offices.

Duterte hopes for a similarly smooth operation when processing the death benefits and pensions of widows of policemen and soldiers he said.

He does not want widows to be travelling to Manila to obtain the documents. Instead, Duterte advised the main office in Manila to process them and send it over to the regional offices.
