How Cape Town used open data to cut traffic jams

The “most congested city in South Africa” got a little better.
Cape Town is the “most congested city in South Africa,” officials wanted to change this. They turned to open data, sharing information with developers and asking for help.
“Helping poorer people find more affordable opportunities to get to work is good for the economy. Making it easier for tourists to enjoy our beautiful city will boost tourism. And as we learn about people’s movement patterns...we gain valuable information,” said Andrew Stelzner, the city’s Director of Information Systems and Technology.
