How Paris is cutting traffic congestion with IoT

A sharing scheme to replace thousands of private cars.
Paris is implementing an electric car-sharing scheme to cut traffic congestion in the metropolitan, and 63 surrounding municipalities.
A case study by Microsoft expects the scheme to replace 25,000 privately owned cars by 2023, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 75 million metric tons.
Cars, rental kiosks and charging stations are connected across the city. Usage data helps them predict customers’ needs and tailor services to their behaviour.
An important consideration was that the scheme fits into existing transport networks. Drivers can choose from schemes ranging from one day to a year.
They can take a train or bus to office and drive a car home if they have to work late. The city expects to cut drivers’ transportation costs by 90% annually.
