Big data analytics can alert officials in advance to flaws in digital services and sensor networks.


McGill University, for instance, is using a platform that identifies potential weaknesses, allowing staff to act before serious damage is caused. Every second the analytics tool looks at 700 events. It pulls together data from millions of activities to create a story to help senior officials make quicker decisions.


This has helped the university uncover and prevent five major flaws annually - which could have otherwise led to lost data and angry customers.
