Malaysia phases out vehicle registration cards

Malaysia’s road and transport department is reducing its use of physical records, improving service efficiency across all offices in the country.

The department is rolling the changes out in three phases, starting this June till January 2017.

This will phase out the use of its vehicle registration cards, which citizens had to bring to road and transport offices in order to log changes to vehicle ownership, register for new vehicles or renew their road taxes.

The service will first apply to new vehicle registrations and transfers of ownership. In the second phase, scheduled in September, it will be available for road tax renewals and corrections to vehicle information.

The service will be open to all vehicle owners by January next year. The department aims to eliminate the use of its registration cards by 1 January 2020. Image by Connie Ma, licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0
