Malaysia to use heat-sensing camera to catch criminals

The Malaysian Coast Guard will use cameras that take photos based on heat waves to catch criminals at sea.

The infrared cameras can detect different frequencies of light waves that are not visible to humans, allowing them to see through fog and darkness, and detect temperature from 3.7 kilometers away.

"Through this system, we can detect movement on boats to the extent of knowing whether the individuals are armed or not," said Datuk Ahmad Puzi Ab Kahar, Director General of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.

The camera will also provide evidence to use during investigations.

“We can record the visual to be used as evidence for prosecution in court if there is any criminal conduct,” he added.

The RM1.8 million (US$433,250) camera was built in Japan and given to the agency by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
