My Urban Challenge: Smart City Officer, Jakarta

The capital city of Indonesia is home to some of the worst traffic congestion in the world - but is also home to the largest bus rapid network in an effort to combat said congestion.

The city is no stranger to tech-driven solutions spanning across various challenges - it employs data analytics to manage bus routes and predict arrival times through an app. The newest struggle for Setiaji, head of the Jakarta Smart City Unit, lies in getting SMEs to adopt digital payments systems.

The private sector is slower on the uptake of digital payments compared to the government, where all transactions are now cashless. To solve this, Setiaji hopes to implement an integrated payments platform across several sectors.
