How Montreal moved to online voter registration

Citizens expect their opinions to be taken into government decision-making, and that is why Montreal city changed its approach.

The city voted in a new government, riding on a promise to deepen citizens’ involvement through referendums. But without proper data on voters, it had to move quickly to register eligible citizens.

In a short period of time, it built a digital list of all voters in the city. Pop-up registration booths were set up to reach citizens all over and the data was aggregated in real-time.

The information is sensitive and the government has to make sure it is accurate. It used secure connections between the booths and the central registrar’s office to ensure the data was kept safe.
