Singapore launching new biometric system

Singapore is rolling out a new system to capture the thumbprints of everyone entering the country, it was announced today.

The system will be introduced this week and will capture the biometrics of all travelers aged six and above. The move may increase queues to enter Singapore, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority said.

However, locals can still use fast lanes to enter using their ID cards. The move comes as Singapore increases its security and terrorism prevention measures. Extra CCTV is being installed across the island, and armed police are patrolling all areas at high risk.

Meanwhile, Japan has just announced plans to use biometric data to allow tourists to make payments. The country will monitor the data, using it to create new tourism strategies.
