Thai Police to monitor social media accounts

The Royal Thai Police plans to monitor public posts and accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Pantip, a Thai discussion forum.

The government wants a vendor to provide software, hardware, and training for officials to do this, according to procurement documents published by the police’s Technology Crime Suppression Division.
 

It should be able to monitor targeted social media accounts, notifying officials when specific keywords are used by these accounts. Followers of the target accounts will be monitored.

Any other users liking, sharing, or commenting on a targeted post will also be tracked. The Police will use this data to create a map of the targeted users and their networks.

The system is aimed at preventing cybercrime, according to the procurement documents, and will be connected to the government’s data on crime investigation cases.
