Complain against Malaysian police via social media

The Malaysian Police want citizens to report corrupt officers via Facebook, it has announced. The police set up a department in 2014 to receive complaints for citizens, and along with that a Facebook page. It has since received only 46 reports, however.

“Many people are unaware that they can lodge a report against our personnel on Facebook but I believe the trend will change,” said Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman, director of the Integrity and Standard Compliance Department.

“We are ready to receive these complaints,” he added in an interview, according to The Star. Most reports through Facebook have been about police officers gambling or being involved in “social vices”, the paper reports.

Citizens provide information on the location and photographs as evidence. Most citizens still “prefer” to write letters to the police, said Commissioner Jalaluddin: “We have 18 channels for the public to choose from but based on our statistics, the majority of complainants prefer to lodge reports via letters.”

“The problem is that most complainants would give very vague information and do not leave their contact details,” he added.
