Agencies have found that sharing government data publicly improves their staff’s productivity.
By publishing their data whenever possible, organisations have cut time spent on gathering data and responding to requests from the public and other agencies, a whitepaper by Esri has found.
Nebraska state in the US, for instance, has cut the number of requests by a significant 70% by creating an open data site where people can find data themselves, in an easy-to-understand format.
Open data is more than a tool for transparency. It is an intelligence tool for agencies to inform policy, improve service delivery and create jobs.
