University students required to work full-time as part of course.

Malaysian universities will require students to work for at least a year as part of their degree programme.

Five public universities will require two years of full-time studies, and two years of industrial training and work. However, the detailed course structure differs for each university.

"This collaboration will ensure students get working experience”, said Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, Higher Education Minister. This will enhance their marketability, and allow graduates to attain jobs, he added.

In University Technology Malaysia (UTM), the programme covers all courses in the computer science database curriculum.

“The classes are combined with courses that are conducted by the industry,” the university’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Rose Alinda Alias, told GovInsider.

UTM students will get trained by companies in the third year, and move on to full time jobs in their fourth year. They will be given professional qualification certificates if their skills pass the industry standards.

The programme will be carried out in University Sultan Zainal Abidin, University Malaysia Kelantan, University Putra Malaysia, University Technology Malaysia and University National Malaysia. Image by Sham Hardy, licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0
